Three members of the Jarawa tribe were reportedly assaulted by local poachers at Kadamtala in Middle Andaman on Thursday. According to sources, a group of four unidentified poachers trespassed into the Jarawa reserve area for hunting on a country boat when the tribes requested them to convey them to a nearby shore.

The present Government, it needs to be recalled, has been liberalizing private investment from the very beginning. Many incentives have been held out to domestic and foreign investors, especially to the latter. Still, the response is poor.  The CMIE has reported that last year this time,, the inflow of private investment was to the tune of Rs. 2.5 lakh crore.

The 2017-18 budget is a desperate gamble of the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hoodwink the common masses by sidelining the adverse impact of the demonetisation on the rural economy, especially the informal sector by highlighting the so called new programmes in agriculture. The effects of demonetisation will not spill over the next year-that is the brunt of the message in the Economic Survey and the Budget but what will happen to the loss of jobs during the current financial year due to demonetisation that has disrupted the rural economy?
