The BJP in West Bengal is fast replacing the Left and coming up as the main Opposition party to the ruling TMC. Surprisingly, this ominous trend does not worry a large segment of the West Bengal Left. Rather they derive a vicarious pleasure in this development. Their feeling is, to put it inelegantly, “This woman (Mamata Banerjee) ousted us from power which we enjoyed for 34 years. She has been steadily making us more and more irrelevant in West Bengal. We cannot put up any fight to her. But the BJP is doing it. This is something we should be happy about.”

The entire Southern India is reeling under a severe drought. Tamil Nadu has been worst hit. A sensation-seeking and sensation-mongering media has hardly highlighted the plight of the people down South. Drought has caused crop losses. Today the situation is so grave that whatever drinking water is available is being used to meet the thirst of humans, the cattle are being deprived. A Swiss insurer has estimated the losses suffered by Tamil Nadu due to drought at three billion dollars or Rs. 19,463 crore. However, only about Rs 25.95 crore losses were insured.
