Although the BJP and Sangh Parivar are celebrating the Supreme Court judgment on triple talaq and claiming credit for liberating Muslim women from the male dominated Muslim society, their past behaviour betrays a striking callousness when it comes to the empowerment of Hindu women. On the contrary, they took every possible step to stall a major initiative taken by our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his law minister Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Harihar Swarup

The Supreme Court made history when in a landmark 3-2 verdict, it 'set aside' the centuries-old practice of instant triple talaq  in which Muslim men divorce their wives by uttering 'talaq, talaq, talaq' in quick succession. The apex court thus ended a source of injustice that put certain sections of Sunni Muslim women at great disadvantage.

The second is that in reshuffling his Cabinet, Narendra Modi’s emphasis was on selecting competent men who can deliver rather than on their Hindutva credentials.
