About 13,000 sportspersons participated in the ‘Thomas Cook Andaman Marathon-2018’, the mega event of the Islands, which was conducted here on Sunday. The Lt. Governor, Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) flagged off the race from the historic Cellular Jail, in the presence of Mr Rahul Bose, the Brand Ambassador of the Marathon.

I had privilege of covering two elections – 1962 and 1967 – when the polls to the Lok Sabha and State assemblies were held simultaneously. I have seen closely the strain it put on the state election commission and Chief Election Officer. It was a massive exercise for the Election Commission too after every five years. The governance, no doubt, then was better. One advantage to the ruling dispensation, at that time, was that most of the states and Centre were ruled by one party that is Congress.

It is perhaps a sign of changing times – times that are changing for the worse – that what was once unthinkable has now become almost a matter of daily occurrence. Minor girl students are becoming victims of sexual molestation not only by male students and others but also by their own teachers. Even two or three year olds are no exception. What happened in a well-known school in South Kolkata is an instance. A dance teacher allegedly molested a Class II girl.
