The second National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam was published on July 30. (The first one was published way back in 1951) After its publication, 40,06,707 residents of Assam, many of them living there for several generations, found that their names “had not appeared” in the NRC. They have now been given time till September 28 to apply for inclusion of their names with documents.

It is most unusual for a presiding officer of a legislature, who usually comes from the ruling party, to expunge the remarks of a prime minister for using language unbecoming of his office. At least in the parliamentary history of India, it is difficult to recall such an incident. The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on Thursday expunged the remarks of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about a Congress member who had contested and lost the election for the office of the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
