Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech surreptitiously missed the Make in India story, while he was exuberant about all other major schemes. Make in India was supposed to be his flagship scheme, as it was projected as the main driver of job creation in the country.

The Law Commission has opined that a Uniform Civil Code is “neither necessary nor desirable at this stage.” Indeed, the aggressive zeal with which the militant fringe of the majority community is crying for introducing/imposing a uniform civil code here and now is primarily driven by the urge to further alienate the minority community. In a democratic society what is ideal may not be desirable at a given point of time, far less implementable.
