While the civic body is striving to develop  the capital city of these islands under the Smart City Mission of the Union Government, a series of old and dilapidated wooden buildings in the different parts of the city are denting the efforts in this regard.

Last week Nepal signed a Transit and Transport Agreement with China which will give the land-locked country access to four Chinese seaports. These are: Tianjin (3276 kms from Nepal), Liyanyugang (3379 kms), Shengzen (3064 kms) and Shenjiang (2755 kms). As against these, the Kolkata seaport which had all along served as the port for all imports by Nepal, is just 775 kms away.

The Supreme Court has, by a majority judgment on Thursday, upheld the right of the State to put ‘reasonable restriction’ on a citizen’s right to privacy by validating the Aadhar scheme. But at the same time has it laid down a lakshman rekha which the State cannot cross in its efforts to make the citizens’ right to almost every service contingent on his having an Aadhar card.  It would have been better if the brother judges of Justice D. Y. Chandrachud had agreed with him in holding the Aadhar scheme as unconstitutional and declared it null and void.
