There is no mistaking it. The Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has lost the political initiative because of its shockingly inept handling of the Supreme Court verdict on the Sabarimala temple.
The government’s unseemly hurry to implement the verdict lifting the age restrictions on women entering the shrine has touched off a wave of indignation across the state. And adding insult to injury was the Chief Minister’s pressure on the Travancore Devaswam Board (TDB) to drop its plan to file a review petition.

Is it possible to overturn the seven decade old regime of industrial relations in a democracy like India by stealth? Without much debate and by making the existing labour laws irrelevant without passing any new law? Unbelievable but true! This is precisely what the Modi government did on 20 March 2018 when it extended fixed-term employment to all sectors.

One of the promises that Narendra Modi, as the BJP candidate for prime ministership in the 2014 general elections, made was to create twenty million or two crore jobs a year during the next five years. That this has not happened is well known. This fact has now been brought out in the Labour Ministry’s data on job creation, causing acute embarrassment to the Government. The data were given in the report of the Estimates Committee of Parliament headed by none other than the veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.
