The coming elections in the five states—Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram — have been rightly described as the “semifinal” to 2019 Lok Sabha polls. With the announcement of these elections, India has well and truly entered the poll season. Doubtless, the stakes are higher for the Congress but the popularity of the BJP too will be put to test in the coming assembly elections of the five states. The Congress hopes to rejuvenate the party by romping home in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh where it is pitted against the BJP.

The Supreme Court’s Directive to the Modi Government on October 10 asking it to provide the details of the decision making process on the Rafale deal to the Court in a sealed cover by October 29, has rattled the Modi Government. The Prime Minister’s Office which in fact spearheaded the revised agreement that was announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 10, 2015 in Paris is in jitters as the entire process of decision making is marked by violation of the standard procedures of defence procurement.

When he was campaigning in the last general elections as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in 2014, Narendra Modi had said once in power he would ensure ‘minimum government, maximum governance.’ The promise of ‘minimum government’ is being implemented but perhaps not in the sense that the prime minister meant it. One of premier agencies of the Government – the CBI – was witnessing a no-holds-barred war between its director and its special director. Both accused each other of corruption.
