Chief minister Mamata Banerjee today said it was promoters and builders who were behind the agitation against installation of  power grid at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district.

For the last six months a movement has been raging at Bhangar where a group of farmers has been agitating against the setting up of a power grid saying it would become a serious health hazard for the people of the area. The farmers who are being led by a group of ultras are also protesting against an alleged acquisition of farm land by the government. The agitation which turned violent occasionally has already claimed two lives besides injuries of a dozen people.

``Hooligans can never be assets of a country. While the whole of West Bengal will have power, the people of Bhangar will be deprived of it. I cannot accept that. It is some promoters and developers who are behind this agitation. They are spreading canards that the power grid will lead to infertility in women, loss of crops, this is all nonsense,'' Manata today said at a rally at Bhojerhat ground at Bhangar where she inaugurated a lot of developmental projects besides laying foundation stones of a slew of other projects. She also exhorted the villagers not to allow outsiders to come there and create trouble.

``If you have any complaint against any officer or leader or anything you let me know. But nobody should break law, amassing of weapons and bombs will be strictly dealt with,'' the chief minister said. From the dais of the rally while the chief minister laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 18,000 km road, she also announced that a medical college would be established at Bhangar soon.
