Campbell Bay, Oct 4/--/ For commuters in remote Great Nicobar, the trauma of travelling in old rickety STS buses and getting stuck midway due to frequent breakdowns is not going to end anytime soon. The region is facing a major crisis due to shortage of buses as six of the total 10 in the STS fleet are under repairs. According to reports, one of the four in the operational STS fleet suffered a major breakdown on Wednesday leaving only three buses to cater to a massive population in the region.
“The ageing fleet of STS buses here has been taking a toll on commuters here for the past many months, but authorities have failed to address the situation till date. At least seven STS buses are presently under repairs and passengers are facing a tough time travelling to different parts here.  Routine breakdown of STS buses has become a common phenomenon and commuters are left to wait for long hours in the middle of the journey for the replacement bus to arrive. One can easily imagine the plight of passengers with just three STS buses deployed in different routes here. Overcrowding in the buses has become the order of the day. For complete apathy of the Transport Department, commuters here are reeling under inadequate bus services and massive resentment is brewing in the region,” said some commuters speaking to EOI.
