The Madras High Court today ordered notice to the state government on a PIL seeking a direction to cancel the licenses issued for sand quarrying in the state and compulsory use M-Sand as an alternative material for construction activities. A division bench, comprising Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh and Justice R. Mahadevan, posted the matter for further hearing to March 2. The petitioner, M Appavu, former DMK MLA, submitted that he gave a representation on February 2 to authorities to cancel licenses to quarry sand and to compulsorily use M-Sand instead of river sand, as mining of river sand was having adverse effect on rivers. The petitioner also pointed out to the construction works being reportedly carried out in more than 1000 water bodies out of 18789 in the state by authorities, resulting in depletion of water table.(PTI)
