Following the stern instructions from  Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee the police arrested 12 persons from Sitai area for allegedly organizing attack on police personnel while maintaining the law and order. SP, Coochbehar Bholanath Pandey said that the raid would continue to arrest the goons who stood in the way of the police from performing duties.
It may be mentioned that the Chief Minister issued a strong directive to police to take action against the law-breakers. The CM expressed annoyance with the violence occurred in the district earlier.
Soon after the CM gave police a free hand, extensive raids were conducted by police at different areas.
When a large contingent of police rushed to Rokbari area of New Bazaar in Sitai after coming to know about assembly of miscreants, the police personnel were reportedly attacked. The miscreants allegedly opened fire and a bullet hit Parimal Burman, a security-guard of the sub divisional police officer.
Pandey said that the police raid was made after knowing that arms were collected  at the locality by some miscreants.
Although police was baffled with the attack initially, soon  further raid was conducted in search of the miscreants.
Within 24 hours police arrested 12 persons.
It was alleged by the opposition parties that the attack on police was made by the miscreants who were under the shelter of youth Trinamool Congress leaders of the locality.
Nishith Pramanik, a secretary of district youth Trinamool, however, denied involvement of the workers of the organization with the incident. “Our organization had no attachment to those who attacked police and were arrested.”
North Bengal development minister Rabindranath Ghosh also denied that the accused of police attack were close to Trinamool. “Police arrested the goons who are in no way connected to our party,” Ghosh said.
Pandey, the SP said, “Raids against miscreants would continue.” (EOIC)
