Flood situation in the district  today deteriorated following the release of water from Bhutan hills and heavy downpour. Yellow-alert has already been sounded for the river Torsa.
After an embankment on the river Kaljani got collapsed, water entered Kholta village in Coochbehar II block. Nearly 100 houses were waterlogged and 50 families became homeless.
Meanwhile, water-level in the river Raidak has started increasing since Wednesday. As vast areas under municipal ward 5 of Tufanganj municipality got inundated by the water from Raidak, 27 families have been shifted to safer areas by the civic body.
Ananta Burma, chairman of Tufanganj municipality said, “Those families had to be transferred to NN high school and Ila Devi high school as their houses were completely inundated.”
However, those families alleged that they did not receive relief-materials sufficiently and faced troubles due to want of drinking water and food.
Burma said, “Providing relief is our responsibility. Those families were shifted from inundated areas on Wednesday night only. The relief materials would be served to them as quickly as possible. We have been in touch with the district relief officer and other officials of the district administrations.” (EOIC)
