Child molester convicted
A Darjeeling court today found a social worker guilty of having molested a minor girl three years ago and sentenced him to five years rigorous imprisonment under the POSCO Act.
Anupam Mukherjee, the special judge under POCSO and additional district sessions judge, found Bharat Chhetri (34) alias Badal of Kakjhora, Darjeeling guilty of molesting a student in 2014. The victim used to take tuitions in an organisation where he was the in-charge.
After the sentence was announced, Public Prosecutor Pranay Rai said, “The accused was found guilty by the learned judge of molesting a minor student who used to take tuitions from him. The victim was 15 years old at the time. Chhetri has been sentenced to five years RI along with a fine of Rs10,000. He will have to undergo six months more imprisonment in case of default."
According to the PP, the incident took place on November 15, 2014. Chhetri was the in-charge of the A-1 organisation that used to operate from the Red Cross building in Darjeeling giving free tuitions to deprived and needy students. “On that day around 12.30pm, Chhetri called up the victim’s aunt and told her to send her niece for tuitions. The victim reached the Red Cross building half an hour later with two other girls. Apparently, Chhetri asked the other two girls to leave and took the victim into one of the rooms and bolted the door,” said Rai.
The PP said the victim's statement says that once inside, Chhetri showed her porn material and began fondling her inappropriately to which she objected. “Chhetri slapped the girl when she spat on his face. Another girl has also made a similar allegation of molestation against Chhetri,” Rai said.
Chhetri was booked under Section 8 of the POCSO Act after 10 witnesses were examined during trial.
