A fire broke out this afternoon at Makaibari Tea Estate in Kurseong destroying the near-century old director’s bungalow.
According to Kurseong sub-divisional officer Debasish Chatterjee, the fire started around 2.45pm. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but a short circuit is quite possible, he said. The bungalow was a semi wooden structure said to be nearly 100 years old. There are no reports of loss of life or injuries, but the garden management said important documents including old artifacts and photos of the tea garden have been destroyed. Two fire engines from Kurseong were pressed into service to douse the flames but the entire structure had been razed to the ground by then. (EOIC)
