West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to hold an administrative meeting with the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration on Tuesday, followed by the foundation-stone laying ceremony at the Chowrasta in Darjeeling town on Wednesday for the State University for the hills for which a Bill was passed in the State assembly recently. She arrived at Bagdora airport in the afternoon and headed straight for Darjeeling.
Mamata Banerjee is slated to arrive in Darjeeling town late on Monday evening, her convoy from Bagdogra airport likely to be held up en route by a number of receptions lined up en route by her party Trinamool Congress at places like Rohini, Kurseong, Sonada and Darjeeling. “The visit of the Bengal Chief Minister is an official one and not a party programme. But she is the leader of our party which is why we are welcoming her,” Trinamool Hills president L. B. Rai said on Monday. “Apart from the
flags our cadres and leaders are also there to welcome her in the different places.”
Rai himself was seen overlooking the preparations to welcome the Chief Mnister in Darjeeling town, coming all the way from Mirik. He said the Chief Minister was scheduled to stay in Darjeeling till September 6. Trinamool party members were seen putting up party flags right from Rohini uphill. “The flags signify the increase of supporters in Trinamool (Hills) at present,” Rai said. Trinamool flags were seen being put up overhead on the streets and the walls leading to Darjeeling.
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, too, is making preparations to welcome the Chief Minister. Morcha concentrated more on setting up welcome gates from Sukna onwards with such gates also seen in the Darjeeling Railway station. “We have put up gates right from Sukna onwards to Darjeeling with there being such gates in places like Jorebunglow among others. The welcome is being done in a grand way as the people are happy here with the recent development of having a state university for the hills. The people here are thankful towards her for this as this university will be beneficial for all here,” said the Morcha leader Alok Kanta Mani Thulung.
Morcha supporters were also in different places along the way to welcome the Chif Minister to the hills. (EOIC)
