Priyanka’s entry into politics a booster for Cong

The decision of the Congress high command  to appoint Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as party general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh (East) has been seen a masterstroke by the Congress leadership aimed at infusing new hope and enthusiasm in the party rank and file in the country, particularly UP. Political observers indeed recall a statement of Rahul and Priyanka's father Rajiv Gandhi to the media at Shantiniketan when he was prime minister that between his two children it was Priyanka who showed more interest in politics.  Indeed it has been the demand of the party workers for a long time to bring Priyanka into active politics.  According to Congress insiders she was earlier actively involved in key decision making in the party along with her mother Sonia Gandhi and brother Rahul, including the selection of new chief ministers for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. She also played a major role in initiating the entry of Manpreet Badal and Navjot Singh Sidhu in the Punjab Congress. The party's decision is regarded as quite well timed to boost the morale of the party that had been out of power in UP for the last 35 years.  And with Priyanka's induction in Uttar Pradesh politics the 2019 electoral battle in the state which has got 80 Lok Sabha seats has become both challenging to the stake holders and interesting to political pundits. The reason is quite clear: Though the popularity of BJP is at a low ebb as reflected in the results of recent by-elections it is in the saddle and is expected to go full throttle to retain its lion's share in LS seats. At the same time the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have entered into an electoral alliance that has also become a cause of concern for not only the BJP but of course the Congress, which has decided to contest all the seats. The Congress thus has got a tough task at hand and the move to induct Priyanka in the party leadership is going to help the party unsheathe its sword and launch a fierce offensive to regain power in Uttar Pradesh. And for the party rank and file in other states too who have got rejuvenated after the party’s win in the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, it has come as another major morale booster also.
