Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sikkim, former state BJP President Padam Chettri has raised questions on the status of repair of the National Highway 10  that was under progress.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had announced a fund of Rs 17,000 crore to maintain the existing national highway in Sikkim and also to construct an alternative highway. “This could have been the greatest gift to the people of Sikkim but seeing no acquisition of land for the alternative highway and the deplorable condition of the existing highway I feel very sad,” Padam Chhetri said in a news conference on Tuesday. “Whenever we travel through NH10 we have to keep asking questions about the state of our life looking the pathetic condition of the highway which runs through parallel to the beautiful river Teesta,” he rued.
“It was assured that the highway will be the world class after it is being taken by NHIDCL but it's been more than a year the NHIDCL has taken responsibility to maintain the existing highway and its condition has deteriorated further. instead of developing it and laying an alternative highway no single piece of land has been acquired,” alleged Chettri. “We are unsafe due to highway and our life is in danger,” he opined.
