Electoral literacy programme for Arithang constituency

An electoral literacy programme for the Arithang constituency parts 6, 7, 8 and 9 was held on Thursday at the Conference Hall, Old Secretariat, Gangtok, in the presence of representatives of traders associations, hawker associations and senior citizens.The main objectives of the ‘Chunav Pathsala’ was to educate the targetted population of the entire electoral process, generating awareness on electoral process right from the age of around 14 years and to facilitate registration of citizens as voters on attaining the age of 18.
Speakers at the meeting emphasized on the importance of participation in the electoral process to ensure a responsive, accountable and democratically formed government. The participants were advised on the value of their votes to ensure a responsive government and the importance of exercising the legal right of franchise with responsibility.
Chairperson of the meeting councilor Sandhya Prasad and other public representatives were requested to take note of left-out voters such as women, senior citizens and PWD voters and to ensure that they take part in the electoral process. In an interactive session, common people mentioned their grievances. (EOIC)
