Sikkim entitled to a peace bonus, says Pawan Chamling

Chief minister Pawan Chamling has suggested that Sikkim is entitled to a peace bonus from the Centre for ensuring peace and security in a strategically important border state.In a meeting with Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs H. S. Puri in Gangtok on Friday, Chamling said the sanction of such a peace bonus would send a good message across the country.
The Chief Minister also apprised the Union Minister of the initiatives taken by the State Government towards beautifying and upgrading the bazaar areas. He said different policies towards environment conservation had resulted in a record increase of four per cent in forest cover in the State, said an IPR release.
Puri congratulated Chamling on being the longest-serving Chief Minister of the country and praised the State on implementation of Central programmes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan; and also on Gangtok and Namchi being selected as the two smart cities. He also thanked the Chief Minister for the welcome he had received in Sikkim.
The Union Minister during the day reviewed the progress of different flagship projects of the Centre in Sikikim at a meeting held at Chintan Bhawan. He commended the State on implementation of flagship programmes in the State and observed that Gangtok was doing notably well in the “Ease of Living” index. He urged the State Government to expedite the submission of proposals for projects for Central assistance for early sanction. He assured that the Centre would provide assistance in creating urban infrastructure. He said, however, that the quality of the road between Bagdogra and Gangtok should improve. (EOIC)
