The Football Players Association of Sikkim (FPAS) has ben formed after a meeting on Sunday attended by footballers of the State at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok. The meeting had participation of around 50 footballers including those playing for different clubs in the State and those playing outside Sikkim.
Among those attending the meeting were ISL footballers Sanju Pradhan, Nirmal Chettri, Bikash Jairu, Robin Gurung, Kunzang Lachungpa and Uttam Rai.
Speaking to media, Nirmal informed that the meeting resulted in formation of the FPAS which would be an association for and by the football players of Sikkim. There were many issues which were discussed during the meeting for the players.
“We talked on the need for players to maintain a professional culture and stayed disciplined in and outside the field. The players should avoid jumping from one club to another club within the same playing season. We also deliberated on clubs giving professional contracts to the players. Discussion also took on insurance for the players as they have to play in grounds where there are high chances of injuries. The whole talk revolved on players to become professional in their outlook,” said Nirmal.
Footballers playing for clubs within Sikkim who attended the meeting included Nim Tshering Lepcha, Mayel Dok Lepcha, Klip Barfungpa, Ashish Chettri and Shenshah Ansari.
But, the turnout for the meeting was not as expected. “We were expecting a large number of footballers from all districts of the State for the meeting. The association is for the players who are playing in Sikkim. We talked on many things but could not take any concrete resolutions as the turnout was poor,” said Nirmal.
The FPAS has now decided to hold another meeting on July 12 at Guards Ground, Tathangchen.  “We are inviting all footballers, be it senior players or ex-players or young players and also women footballers for the meeting. The association is for the footballers of Sikkim and a larger participation would encourage the initiative. We appeal all to attend the July 12 meeting, especially the senior players whom we look upon to lead and guide the association,” said Nirmal.
The adhoc committee of the FPAS would be formed during the July 12 meeting.  The meeting starts at 11 am. Details and programmes of the association would be finalised at the meeting.
