Steps to mitigate the problem of water supply in Jorethang town was discussed in detail on Tuesday at a meeting in Gangtok convened by Sikkim health minister A. K. Ghatani who is the legislator from Salghari – Zoom constituency, an IPR release said.
It was explained by engineers at the meting that the main source of of water of Rothak was not functioning because of landscaping of the Nayabazar – Legship Road. The three sources of water – Rungdung source, Rinzey source and Charcharey source – were functioning well but because of landslides in the monsoon on the upper reaches of these areas there were instances of muddy water being delivered in the water treatment plant.
The water supply department was treating the water before supplying it to consumers and the water shortage faced by the public was mostly due to the snapping of the supply due to landslides at the raw water mains.
The issue of installing a transformer to the water treatment plant for pumping treated water to Gairey Gaon was also discussed. The Minister assured to provide support for the installation. The Chief Engineer Water Supply mentioned that pipes have already reached the field but due to the landscaping of the road it needed more time till it moved ahead about five kms.  Temporary inflow of water in the mornings and evenings for an hour to two to take care of the needs of the public was in place for the time being. Additional man power will be deployed especially for Jorethang, he said.
The issue of repair and rehabilitation of old existing pressure filter at the RMDD area was also discussed. This was for supplying water to the East bazaar area and part of Mazigaon area. Once the old pressure filter is repaired the issue of water to these areas would also be solved, it was mentioned. (EOIC)
