Landslides following heavy rain spell havoc in West Sikkim

Landslides triggered by incessant rain on Sunday night wrecked havoc in different parts of west Sikkim. At many places the roads have become inaccessible due to landslides that occured at numerous parts of west Sikkim after overnight rain.  Some of the roads were restored sufficently for traffic to pass later in the day, but people feared that more rain may cause a calamity for the people of West Sikkim.
Landslides triggered by heavy rains washed away completely the house of Gyan Bahadur Karki of Lower Yangtey under Yangthang constituency, rendering the family homeless. Family members had abandoned the house, sensing danger; thus causalties were avoided. But Karki lost his four lambs and 400 poultry. The affected family is now residing in the house of a relative. Panchayat members of the ward later visited the house to take stock of the damage.
The house of Gopi Katwal of Sakyong Road near Geyzing Bazar was also damaged because of the sinking of the land underneath. Major cracks have appeared as RCC structures supporting the building have been damaged, making the house vulnerable to caving in at any time. The families residing in the damaged house have been evacuated to safer places. Police personnel, teams from Fire Brigade and NDRF visited the affected site and assessed the damage caused due to the sinking condition of house. They suggested that the families resding there to vacate the house considering the risk factor.
In another landslide on Sunday night, the kitchen of Manoj Tamang of Yangtey was partially damaged. The slush and mud that entered into Tamang's house have damaged his kitchen compeletely, making the area prone to more landslides. People of Yangtey have been living in constant fear as the area is prone to landslides.
