CM inaugurates EIL battery making plant

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today inaugurated a state-of-the-art battery manufacturing unit of Exide Industries Ltd (EIL) here, the third in West Bengal and 11th pan India. During her address as chief guest, Ms Banerjee congratulated EIL for its 70 years presence in the State. She also added that though there is a slump in employment countrywide, EIL has been a successful employment provider and that indeed is a commendable feat. She also inaugurated the Haldia IT Park set up at an expenditure of Rs 24 crore.
Rajan B Raheja, vice-chairman his address said that the company’s decision to set up a unit here is to compliment the chief minister’s efforts to bring about a surge in the State’s industrial scenario and the due recognition of the stable and dedicated work culture of the workforce here. 
The unit has been built with technical collaboration with East Penn Manufacturing Company of the USA, using a ‘Punched Grid Technology’ at a Capital Investment of Rs 700 crore. This technology provides better performance of the product and a longer operational life.
Managing Director & CEO, Gautam Chatterjee informed, after the successful career of the lead acid battery product, the company cornerstone for the last seven decades, the new technology used in the punched grill product will catapult the company to a new height in terms of product reliability and customer satisfaction. The new range of batteries will be a lot more robust, as being manufactured in a modern plant with advanced robotics and automation, and this procedure also succeeds in eliminating human errors to a large extent.
The company intends to set up a smelting plant also and is awaiting availability of suitable land in its mother unit’s vicinity, Mr Chatterjee informed.
