Mamata congratulates Asian games champion Swapna’s parents

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee greeted Basana Barman, mother of Swapna Barman, who won a gold medal at heptathlon event of Asian Games on Wednesday. Chief Minister assured all sorts of help for Swapna’s family over phone.
Tourism minister Gautam Deb rushed to Swapana’s residence in Jalpaiguri today to shower greetings upon her family. Soon the CM called on Deb’s mobile phone and spoke to the young athlete’s mother for nearly four minutes.
Daughter of Panchanan Barman, a rickshaw-puller, Swapna had a golden performance in the international sports event and thus became cynosure of the country. Panchanan Barman, who has long been battling with illness said, “Swapna did not give up to poverty and other odds. She kept fighting and now she has achieved her mission.”
Soon after she won the medal by registering a magnificent performance, Swapna has been flooded by congratulations from all corners. The central government has already declared prizes and other helps to the champion athlete. The state government has also assured prize money and other facilities.
Siliguri Municipal Corporation has also declared that a special welcome would be accorded to Swapna for having earned laurel for the nation. Puja committees of Jalpaiguri and Siliguri queued up at her door to obtain consent from her parents so that the inauguration could be done by her. Deb said, “Swapna has made us all proud. The Chief Minister has assured that she would be offered all possible cooperation so that she can keep performing without any worry.” (EOIC)
