During the first three months of 2017 Bengal farmers have achieved some significant success, particularly in the field of potato and onions.  To encourage this new farming effort, Spencer’s Retail has initiated from today sales of giant-sized onions from its hyperstore at Rash Behari Avenue.
A young farmer from Raina (Burdwan) has successfully produced this season giant-sized onions weighing more than 500 gms – his name is Gunadhar Sahana, who went to Nasik for inspiration and came back to apply his new-found knowledge on 7 cottahs of land at Raina which has given him within four months an output of 14 quintal of onion.  These giant-sized onions are being sold at Rash Behari Avenue Spencer’s stores at Rs. 12 per kg.  A Spencer’s spokesman said in Kolkata, “We are delighted to establish direct relationship with ambitious farmers and in the light of experience gained we are ready to offer to consumers a new range of vegetables and fruits”.
According to Gunadhar Sahana, he has developed his own organic fertilizer and is optimistic about its efficiency. Initially called “Raina Onion”, this giant-sized onion is available (2 kg per person) at Rs. 12 per kg. (EOIC)
