Haldia Power Plant wins ICC Environment Excellence Award

The 600 mw Haldia Energy Power Plant Ltd (HEL) is this year’s winner of the prestigious ICC Environment Excellence Award.  At the Environment Partnership Summit in Kolkata on Wednesday, the award was presented to HEL managing director Mr. Rabi Chowdhury.  The Runner-Ups in the category were ITC Limited, Munger Plant (India Tobacco Division).
This is the 11th year of the ICC Award programme, the initiative being supported by the department of environment, government of West Bengal and West Bengal Pollution Control Board.
Companies in the Large Business Organisation Segment applied from all over the country.  After the initial selection process, HEL was selected for a presentation in front of the Jury.  Thereafter, it was subjected to onsite assignment as part of the final selection criteria.  While deciding on the award, the judges examined the environment management practices, the focus areas being pollution control, green initiatives, and environmental performance trends, as also future plans for improvements.  This was followed by a site visit across the plant at Haldia to examine the company’s commitment towards environment, health and safety.  The judges particularly appreciated HEL’s air pollution control measures and its innovative approach for restricting chimney emission, green belt development, conversion of existing office buildings in green buildings and the comprehensive waste management schemes.
The HEL plant, inaugurated by Mamata Banerjee, chief minister, government of West Bengal, began commercial generation (300 mw) on January 28, 2015, the second unit (300 mw) was commissioned on February 21, 2015. (EOIC)
