Highest allocation at HMC budget

23 Mar 2018

Mayor Rathin Chakrabarty of Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) today presented the annual budget for the civic body with the highest amount allocated so far by the civic body--Rs 781.73 crore. The Mayor, who said that no new tax had been imposed on the people, also informed the House that it was a zero-deficit budget prepared for overall development of civic amenities of the residents of this city.
Out of the total allocation, Rs 585.98 crore has been earmarked for development purposes, the Mayor said. ``While 37 per cent of this amount has been allocated for improving the civic amenities for slum dwellers as well as the poor living in city areas, 18 per cent has been earmarked for minority development  and the remaining 45 per cent will be spent on other areas,'' Mr Chakrabarty said in his speech.
The Mayor also said that the civic body had made special efforts to tackle the menace of dengue that had ravaged the whole of the state last year. “Last year we had engaged 2386 persons and 284 supervisors for this job. And this year we have hired eight more supervisors,'' Our aim is to take on the monster tooth and nail,'' the Mayor said.
He also complained that HMC is yet to receive all the money due from central government organisations to the civic body. (EOIC)
