KoPT celebrates birth anniversary

24 Oct 2017

The birth anniversary of 147 year young Port was observed at Kolkata Port on 17th October, 2017 at Kidderpore Docks, which came into existence as the first riverine wet dock in the country in 1892, is served by a historic clock tower erected by the Kolkata Port Commissioners in 1989. This clock tower sports a turret clock manufactured by Cooke and Kelvey.  The tower and its chiming clock which was one of a few of its kind in Calcutta at the time it was constructed, not only served as a time-keeper for the growing port establishment of the day, but was also instrumental in helping ships in matching their sailing schedules.
On this occasion, Vinit Kumar, Chairman, Kolkata Port Trust stated that despite Kolkata Port being the only riverine major port in the country has been consistently maintaining its pivotal position in Indian Major Ports for the last 147 years. As a matter of delight Mr Kumar mentioned that from April to September, 2017 Kolkata Port Trust handled 27.565 million tonnes traffic against 24.623 million tonnes from April to September, 2015, recording a high growth of 12%. The employees who will retire this month, planted the trees and were appreciated for their good contribution to the development effort of Kolkata Port.  Chairman, KoPT emphatically said that with the active co-operation of port users and whole hearted efforts of all employees for the year 2017-18 Kolkata port will be able to handle 55 million tonnes of traffic.
