Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) is keen to go ahead with the Tajpur port project and sees it viable, whereas on the question of Sagar deep sea port – it is ready to do the biding provided the state renders all cooperation- the KoPT chairman M T Krishna Babu said on Thursday.
Expressing doubts over the implementation  of the Sagar Port project,   Krishna Babu said : “ The fate of  Sagar port hangs in the balance since the state government, of late ,has developed cold feet as it were , and if it has to see the light of the day the state   government will have to take a call on it  since it involves  large-scale rehabilitation e and will require  huge funds ”’.
Holding out hopes on the Tajpur project, the chairman said that notwithstanding  the reported  Centre-state differences over stakes in the project , he said the Centre is ready to involve itself with the venture in a big way..
On the performance of the KoPT in 2016-17, the chairman said that KoPT registered growth of 18.41 per cent by handling 7, 71, 676 TEUs in  2016-17 vis-a- vis 6, 62, 891 TEUs in 2015-16. It emerged third  amongst all Indian major ports  in terms of container traffic in 2016-17.

The Kolkata port has also made a  tremendous stride in goods transportation to North Eastern states using India-Bangladesh river protocol route in 2016.
