The festive season is set in full swing. It is the time to welcome our beloved daughter UMA or Devi Durga who is the symbol of power to fight evil. Women are conceptualised as incarnation of the immense power, but the real truth is grim. Whether you are a doctor or engineer or your achievement in any field is excellent yet one is always reminded that you are the second sex and your place is at home taking care of the house. It is the dictate of the patriachal society.
Today I had been to my bank .When my token number was shown in the screen I went to the counter only to find that a 'gentleman' who claimed himself to be a doctor of a government hospital was shouting at the lady at the counter because there wasn’t enough cash in the counter to meet his demand. He was requested to wait but he would not listen. He boasted that he drew a salary of one lakh and he had the last word in the emergency department of the hospital. Unfortunately I had seen the plight of the patients in the emergency of that particular hospital when my sister in law had an accident. The fight continued for ten minutes when I intervened and I requested him to allow me to do my transaction and to make the mood light I told him I had a house to take care of. Immediately I became his target. In scathing words he reminded me that my proper place was home and not the outside world. I was taken aback. If this is the mentality of an educated 'doctor' how can we fight for our rights. When I protested he made sarcastic remarks and was verbally abusive towards the womenfolk .
Making laws or implementing projects for women and girls is useless unless the mindset of the male dominated society is changed. They worship Devi Durga as 'Shakti Rupano Sangstitha', but fail to respect the real mortal shakti of the earth-woman , the embodiment of power as mother, sister, wife, daughter, without whom the civilization would come to a stop.
On the eve of Devi pakho may that good sense and consciousness prevail upon those who disrespect women and treats them with hatred and contempt.
