Studies have shown that irrespective of the factor of obesity, once an individual exceeds a certain obesity level, it becomes very difficult to reverse the process because of the complications and restrictions caused by the excess weight. Diet and exercise help in select cases but the effects are seldom persistent and in most cases there is a necessity to perform bariatric and metabolic surgery. For this purpose ‘Shape Clinic’ was launched by Rabindranath International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS).
Shape clinic is a one-stop-solution which aims to address the facts, causes, health risks and the treatment options for Obesity. In order to create awareness, a team of doctors from RTIICS initiated an interactive session for knowledge sharing and patient education that was attended by patients who underwent bariatric surgery at RTIICS.
Dr. Sanjay Dubey, Consultant Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgeon, Rabindranath International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, said “Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery is the ultimate cure for morbid obesity as people who are morbidly obese cannot work out much due to hypertension and restricting diet does not help as that needs to be continued for years till they reach normal body weight.”
Dr. Shubhayu Banerjee, Consultant Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgeon, Rabindranath International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, also present at the occasion, said, “For obese people with type II diabetes or hypertension, bariatric surgery becomes essential and life saving as well. We have treated many people here, who were unable to lose weight and suffered from various other ailments and are doing well now with a much better lifestyle and mobility.”
Some of the patients who have experienced benefits of bariatric surgery recounted their journey from a life full of physical challenges and inhibitions to an active and energetic one now. (EOIC)
