Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee today hinted at supporting former Lok Sabha speaker Meera Kumar should she be fielded by the Congress from West Bengal for the sixth Rajya Sabha seat for which a contest will be held. There are six Rajya Sabha seats for the taking from the state.  Trinamool Congress will have its candidates elected on its own based on the numerical strength in the state Assembly while for the sixth seat the CPM or the Congress will have an opportunity to win.

The chief minister Mamata Banerjee who has come to Delhi today to attend the swearing in ceremony of President Ramnath Kovind met Union home minister Rajnath Singh in the evening and apprised him of the Darjeeling unrest and the flood-like situation in the state. ``We have discussed the situation at Darjeeling. We talked about the flood situation in Bengal. We may have political differences but it does not affect functions of the governments,'' Mamata said after her meeting with Singh

The chief minister also said she had not requested for any special assistance from the Centre to tackle the flood situation in the state. ``It has been raining heavily all over the country. There is severe flood situation in other states..in Gujrat there were deaths...we will have to think of the whole country. Right now we ourselves will take care of the situation in our state. If required we will ask for a central assistance,'' the chief minister said.
Describing Singh as a nice man who had recently had a fracture on one of his legs she said that she also had wished him speedy recovery.
