Acting on a tip off Malda police raided a large-scale illegal firearms manufacturing unit at Debipur village of Jadupur gram panchayet under Kaliachak police station on 14 August midnight. Nearly 50 firearms of 7mm and 9 mm were seized from the spot and seven persons including six from Munger district in Bihar were arrested.
Arnab Ghosh, SP, Malda displaying the cache of arms seized from house of one Lutfar Rahman said, “Those firearms were being made at a house not too far from a densely populated area. We believe, those arms were being sold to local miscreants as well as miscreants’ gangs in neighbouring states.”
“Police caught the firearms-makers red-handed on 14 August night. We had definite information and it worked. Those who were arrested are being grilled to gather more information about the persons associated with the illegal arms manufacturing unit,” the SP said.
He informed that along with arms other instruments required for manufacturing those arms were seized from the spot too.
Police officials were bewildered seeing the quality of arms produced at such a rural factory. “The arms were of good quality. The arms-makers appear to be quite proficient in making illegal firearms,” said a senior police official.
Police produced the arrested in court on Wednesday and pleaded for their police custody for further interrogation. (EOIC)
