Stern actions were taken against two temporary non-teaching employees of the University of Gour Banga (UGB) as they had allegedly thrashed the assistant registrar on additional charge Achintya Banerjee on Monday. FIR was lodged against the two accused – Chandan Mandal, a contractual helper under the development officer (DO) and Imdadul Islam working with the central library of the varsity today.
Prof Gopalchandra Mishra, vice chancellor (VC) of the UGB said, “Following my direction and on behalf of the registrar Rajib Patitundi, DO of the varsity lodged written police complaint against Mandal and Islam with English Bazaar police station today.”
“Additionally, they two contractual non-teaching employees have been suspended initially for six months. The decision was taken after a three-member fact-finding committee furnished its report within 24 hours of the incident,” Prof Mishra added.
Meanwhile, the district committee of the Trinamool Congress affiliate Sara Bangla Trinamool Sikshabandhu Samity (SBTSS) expelled Mandal and Islam from the organization. They were members of the organization since their appointment in the UGB two years ago.
Wings of the UGB unit President of SBTSS Manas Sarkar were clipped too. Subhayu Das was appointed the working president of the organization.
Sources in the UGB informed that Sarkar and the two accused non-teaching employees were proximate to Sanatan Das, former controller of examinations (COE) on additional charge. “Das had to step down following the desire of state education minister Partha Chatterjee after several allegations were piled up against him,” said a senior UGB teacher preferring anonymity.
Das, on the contrary, turned down allegations against him and said that some teachers and officials of the varsity were plotting against him.
