BJP candidate joins Trinamool ‘to support state govt’s development prog,’ BJP finds ‘threats’ behind change

A gram panchayet candidate who filed nomination in favour of BJP only a few days back, changed her affiliation even before the ensuing rural polls and joined Trinamool Congress. While Payel Ghosh, the housewife contesting for BJP from gram panchayet seat no. 74 of Baharal gram panchayet in Ratua I block claimed that it was her spontaneous decision to join Trinamool, BJP has interpreted the ‘sudden change’ as a consequence of Trinamool’s alleged ‘reign of terror.’
Payel Ghosh who accepted the Trinamool’s party flag from redoubtable local Trinamool leader Yasin Sheikh and his spouse Payel Khatun yesterday said, “I was misled by BJP leaders who virtually forced me to contest election. I have now been disillusioned. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has developed the state like never before. I want to be a part of that development and so I have chosen to join Trinamool.”
She refused that she was threatened by local Trinamool leaders.
“Look at her face. She clearly looks scared while holding the Trinamool flag. Payel Ghosh was threatened continuously since she tendered her nomination papers. A village housewife has succumbed to Trinamool’s pressure. But we are not giving up. We would take up the matter with state election commission,” said Ajay Ganguly, district general secretary of BJP.
Payel Khatun, zilla parishad candidate of Trinamool from the locality, however, rubbished the allegation. “No one threatened the BJP candidate. She has voluntarily switched over to Trinamool being impressed by state government’s unprecedented developmental programmes,” she said. (EOIC)
