College-girl molested in Up Kanchanjungha express

GRP arrest army personnel in Malda

Insecurity of solo women railway passengers came to fore again as an army personnel was accused of molesting a college-girl on board in NJP bound Up Kanchanjungha express today. The accused jawan identified as Pravat Singh was arrested by GRP (Government railway police) when the train reach Malda town station around 2 pm. As the girl was allegedly molested after the train left Rampurhat station, the accused would be sent to custody of GRP, Saithia for further legal proceedings as learnt from sources.
It has been learnt from sources in GRP, Malda that the complainant-girl was at a side-upper berth of air-conditioned three-tire B-1 coach. She is a resident of Bhaktinagar area and student of a college in Siliguri. She boarded the train from Sealdah to return home.
In her complaint to GRP, the girl claimed that since the train had left Rampurhat station, Singh, the accused army personnel posted in Siliguri sitting at a side-lower berth just under hers started misbehaving with her. He allegedly passed lewd comments her and physically molested too. No co-passenger reportedly stood in her favour when she protested.
The girl further alleged that Singh followed her when she headed to lavatory in train. It was then she raised her voice for help and the coach-attendant standing nearby first rushed to her rescue. Few other passengers gathered there too. The jawan was detained by the passengers. She made a call to GRP’s helpline too and informed the incident verbally first. Finally the army jawan was handed over to GRP in Malda.
An investigating officer of GRP, Malda said, “As per the procedure the accused would be handed over to our counterparts in Saithia station tomorrow.”
