Excitement gripped Kuttitola area under English Bazaar police station last night after Gayetri Ghosh, a Trinamool Congress councilor and wife of English Bazaar MLA and municipality chairman Nihar Ghosh was thrashed while trying to resolve a scuffle between two traders. She was rescued by neighbours and rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH). Acting on written complaint lodged by the injured Trinamool councilor, police arrested four persons including a woman. Ashok Prasad, the prime accused scampered away and could not be arrested even after 24 hours of the incident.
It has been learnt from residents of the locality that Prabhu Saha, a trader at Deshbandhu Chittaranjan municipal market was allegedly assaulted by another trader Prakash Keshari following a tiff yesterday. Saha’s son went to Keshari’s house at a stone-throw distance from the quarter of local Trinamool councilor Ghosh last night.
During the brawl between two traders’ family members Gayetri Ghosh intervened to resolve the matter. It was when Prasad, a relative of Keshari turned up and slapped Ghosh. The lady councilor fell on the ground but members of Keshari family allegedly kept manhandling her. The neighbours rushed to Ghosh’s rescue and arranged to send her to MMCH.
“I was not only injured physically but it was a huge psychological humiliation too to be assaulted publicly by some goons. I lost my gold ornaments too during the attack. The goons slapped me and hit my knees too,” the injured councilor said.
Nihar Ghosh, English Bazaar MLA and chief of English Bazaar municipality said, “I did not believe when the neighbours told me that my spouse was attacked. A complaint with police was lodged. I have complete confidence in police and hope that the criminals would be punished.”
Arnab Ghosh, SP, Malda said, “Police have received a complaint of assault from a lady councilor of English Bazaar municipality. Four accused have been arrested. They are Prakash Keshari, Rajesh Keshari, Kapil Keshari and Rekha Prasad. The prime accused would be arrested too.” (EOIC)
