Theatre lovers of the district are now counting down hours as a four-day long theatre-festival with participants from Bangladesh is going to commence at Gazole from December 22 to commemorate completion of 40th year of popular theatre group Bishan.
Six plays including Shikhandi Katha by Rongpur Natyakendra from Bangladesh would be enacted on stage during the festival, said Tapas Banerjee, director of the theatre group. Gadhadar Roy, secretary of the theatre group informed that bringing the local theatre lovers of Gazole Bishan started its journey way back in 1977. “Few other groups were formed too. While many discontinued failing to meet hefty expenses necessary to run a theatre group, we kept sailing fighting against severe financial crunches and other odds,” Roy said. Now, Bishan has 35 members and its own stage with all modern facilities.
“Each single penny we earned from call-shows and some financial assistance received from the state government, the open stage was built spending Rs 16 lakh. We also have a rehearsal room arranged by Malda Zilla Parishad. But what is now necessary is an auditorium. We are approaching all concerned to get it done,” Roy added. Director of the theatre group said that to commemorate 40th year Bishan held a theatre festival in January and then another in July. “It’s the last phase of the festival to complete our 40th year,” the theatre group director said.
Banerjee informed that on the inaugural and concluding day theatre teams from Bangladesh (Rongpur Natya Kendra) and Kolkata (Ballygunge Bratyajan) would state plays. “Naba Mayukh Natya Sangstha from Kolkata, Anya Bhuban Natyagoshthi from Hooghly, and Skated from Cooch Behar would also perform dramas in addition to our theatre group,” Tapas Banerjee said.
