New vice chancellor (V-C) of the University of Gour Banga (UGB) Prof Swagata Sen made it clear that restoring an ideal academic environment in the campus would be his top priority. Sen, a professor of commerce in the University of Calcutta with prior experience of working as the pro VC (finance) of the same varsity assumed charge of UGB today. He is the 5th VC of Gour Banga varsity that was founded in 2007.
“I have been appointed the VC provisionally for six months. Hence, it’s not possible for me to prepare any long-term plan. My primary aim is to work in the interest of students and resolve their problems, if any,” Prof Sen said.
The new VC said that he was aware of several controversies and allegations about the varsity. “It’s my first day only. I have to speak to all concerned and find solutions. I believe that wherever there’s a problem, there must be a silver lining also. We should work towards finding it,” he said.
He informed that he was told about faulty results of undergraduate examinations. He held a meeting with the varsity’s examination committee members soon after assuming the office.
“There may be some mistakes in results. It happens in Calcutta University also. I would prefer to listen to the grievances of the examinees too. I strongly believe that a solution would be found,” the new VC assured.
Prof Sen said that he was informed of completion of counseling regarding admission into all post graduate departments. “The admission counseling is pending in the PG department of Arabic. I would look into it,” the new VC assured.
