Clash between two neighboring families over Viswakarma puja led to death of a septuagenarian and injury of his three sons. The incident occurred at Puranigram village under Manikchak police station last night. Police arrested five persons in connection with killing of the old man.
It has been learnt from sources in the police that Subal Karmakar, 70 and his family organized Viswakarma puja like other years. His neighbour Naba Karmakar was allegedly pouring water in front of the pandal deliberately.
As Subal Karmar protested, a scuffle followed between the neighbours. Tapan Karmakar, son of Subal Karmakar alleged that Naba Karmakar, his wife and other relatives attacked Subal Karmakar’s house at night.
“They were carrying heavy and sharp weapons. One of them hit my father with an iron rod on his head. We rushed to our father’s rescue. Naba Karmakar and his henchmen thrashed us too,” Tapan Karmakar said.
Subal Karmakar was rushed to Manikchak rural hospital first. However, he was referred to Malda medical college & hospital (MMCH) immediately. Karmakar succumbed to his injuries little after getting admitted to MMCH.
The incident infuriated the villagers and they chased the accused. Five persons were detained by the villagers and later handed over to police.
Police said that Naba Karmakar, Asha Karmakar, Tuli Karmakar, Ananta Karmakar and Amar Karmakar were arrested. A probe has been initiated too. (EOIPC)
