A primary school at Janjalitola village in Ratua I block of the district was engulfed by Ganga waters today. The villagers said that the school was the only primary school for students of three villages. After the school was swallowed by the river, habitants of Bilaimari, Naya Bilaimari and other villages feared that erosion might worsen in next 24 hours.
It may be mentioned that erosion in the Ganga took a serious turn after there was significant rise in the water level. Low lands adjacent to the river have already been inundated. Locals alleged that 50 houses had already been swallowed by the river. They have been shifted to a safer place.
Asis Kundu, chairman of district primary school council (DPSC) said, “Janjalitola primary school has been engulfed by the Ganga. We are sorry but helpless. We are in touch with the district administration so that the school could be founded at an alternate place. Land would be sanctioned for the school.”
Kaushik Bhattacharya, the district magistrate also conceded that the erosion in Ratua I block has taken a serious turn. “I have already inspected the villages on Sep 11. The school was still there when we went to take stock of the situation. But it got obliterated today. The education department officials have requested us to find a land for the school. We are looking into the matter.”
Affected villagers alleged that the district and the block administration did not provide them with proper relief materials.
Newly elected Sabhadhipati of Malda zilla parishad Gour Chandra Mandal said, “The situation is alarming. District administration is trying its best to rescue habitants from areas which could fall into the river soon.”
“Malda zilla parishad is keeping vigil on the situation. We would cooperate with administration for the safety and rehabilitation of the habitants of the villages,” Mandal said.
