Renowned academician of Malda passes away

Renowned academician and social-worker of Malda, Santosh Chakraborty breathed his last at his residence on Tuesday night. He was 94 and suffering from age-related debility.
Chakraborty, who was principal of Malda College in 70’s played a crucial role in organising several other colleges in Malda. A scholar in English and an endearing personality Chakraborty was widely respected for his lucid teaching skills and humanitarian qualities as an academic administrator. He was also attached to several philanthropic organisations throughout his life. Chakraborty also served as a commissioner of English Bazaar municipality and worked in the interest of the people. Students, admirers, academicians, political leaders and common people queued up at his residence at Pirojpur in English Bazaar to pay their last homage to the soul of the nonagenarian educationist.
Congress MPs Mausam Noor and AH Khan Choudhury, former ministers - Krishnendu Choudhury and Sabitri Mitra, vice- chairman of English Bazaar municipality Dulal Sarkar, Opposition leader of the civic body Narendranath Tiwary, district Left Front convener Ambar Mitra, academician Shaktipada Patra and others rushed to Chakraborty’s residence to pay tribute in the morning. His mortal remains was taken to English Bazaar Municipality and University of Gour Banga before cremation. Prof Swagata Sen, V-C of Gour Banga Varsity also paid last homage to Chakraborty. Chakraborty was cremated in presence of hundreds of his admirers and relatives this afternoon. (EOIC)
