Suspected smuggler gunned down at border

A smuggler was gunned down by on duty border security force (BSF) personnel at Chakmilepur village of Shoshani gram panchayet under Kaliachak police station early this morning as has been learnt from sources. Although no official confirmation has been obtained from BSF authorities in this regard yet, local sources claimed that Hriday Ghosh alias Ridu, 35 was killed while smuggling large number of bottles of a particular brand of cough-syrup largely used for addiction in Bangladesh.
It has been learnt from sources that the deceased had allegedly been involved in smuggling for long. While smuggling a huge quantity of the cough-syrup to Bangladesh over the fencing at Indo-Bangla border at Chakmilepur village, he was halted by on duty BSF personnel. According to sources, instead of responding to the command of BSF personnel, Ghosh allegedly rushed towards them with a deadly sharp weapon. It was then the BSF personnel opened fire and Ridu was injured. He reportedly died on spot too. Although refusing to comment officially in this regard, a senior BSF official said that special vigil had been underway considering the upcoming festive seasons. Police officials also refrained from commenting in this regard. But a police official said that the body would be sent for post mortem after BSF hands it over to them. (EOIPC)
