Keeping aside the factional differences, Trinamool Congress leaders of the district today shared dais to kick-off ‘BJP, quit India’ movement following the directive from party supremo and chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Such programmes will be held in all 15 blocks of the district, said district TMC president Dr Moazzem Hossain.
TMC leaders sat in demonstration in front of Town Hall at 10 am today. Along with district party chief Dr Hossain, English Bazaar MLA and civic body chief Nihar Ghosh, chairman of district primary school council Ashish Kundu, district working president Sumala Agarwalla, vice-chairman of English Bazaar civic body Dulal Sarkar, district women’s Trinamool president Chaitali Sarkar and other leaders slammed BJP and Narendra Modi led Union government alleging that the BJP government was trying to divide the country in the name of religion. “On August 9, 1942 Mahatma Gandhi initiated ‘quit India’ movement to oust the British government. Now, our leader has given a similar call to throw away the anti-people government at Centre. We would hold similar movements in all blocks of the district. Our first programme will be in Bamangola,” Agarwalla said.
An effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was burnt down on NH-34 by youth TMC activists today. Biswajit Mandal, general secretary of district TMC’s youth wing, said: “The youths are frustrated with the PM’s anti-people policies. So we protested.”
