For the first time three persons proud to be declare themselves as transgender acted successfully as the judges of ‘Lok Adalat’ of national level held in the district today. Debasish Acharya alias Debi, Jiya Das and Arindam Saha Gupta – three judges appointed by district legal services authority (DLSA) discharged their duties commendably much to the appreciation of other panelists and lawyers.
It has been learnt that following a directive of the Supreme Court of India the national Lok Adalat was in session in Malda along with other parts of the country. Sutanuka Nag, chairman of DLSA said, “We appointed three social activists as judges today. They have acted as judges with praiseworthy impartiality.”
Along with several civil and criminal cases in banking and other public sector units, motor vehicle cases and matrimonial disputes were taken up in today’s Lok Adalat.
A total of 2200 cases were taken to be disposed by eight benches of the adalat.
Bikram Roy, office master of DLSA said, “Lok Adalat helps to reduce large number of cases which have remained pending for years together.” Roy also appreciated the performance and judgmental abilities of three representatives from the transgender community of the state.
The transgender judges were ecstatically happy too. “It’s a great honour for us. We hope that attitude of the society to the members of our community would be positively changed as judiciary has shown already,” Acharya said delightfully.
Saha Gupta said, “The experience has taught us how difficult it is to render justice to people remaining strictly impartial.” (EOIC)
