Registrar on additional charge of the University of Gour Banga (UGB) Prof Sadhan Saha has been asked by the executive council (EC) to leave his office with immediate effect. The decision was adopted in a meeting of the EC in Kolkata today. Biplab Giri, an associate professor and head of physiology department of the varsity has been asked to assume the office of the registrar on additional charge.
The sudden emoval of Prof Saha has surprised all concerned with the UGB. Prof Saha, a teacher of Bengali department of UGB assumed office on additional charge on January 14, 2018 for a period of six months. He received an extension of another six months for the post.
According some sources in UGB, office of Prof Saha was sealed also in presence of some officials following a telephonic direction from the vice chancellor (V~C) Prof Swagata Sen today soon after the EC adopted the resolution regarding Prof Saha’s removal. Although the teachers and officials of UGB preferred to remain reticent regarding the crucial decision, it has been learnt from sources in the varsity that the V~C did not approve some of the actions made by Prof Saha recently. “We are still not clear as to why Prof Saha was asked to leave his office in such a manner. But we have heard that he was accused of misinterpreting decisions of the EC. Allegation of functioning in some respect bypassing the V~C was raised against him too,” said an official on condition of anonimity.
Biplab Giri, the new registrar on additional charge said, “I have been asked by the EC to assume the office forthwith. I am supposed to take over the office from December 21.” “My priority is to sustain the developmental activities of the UGB and discharge my duties under the leadership of the V~C. I want to project the varsity as a family,” he said. Reactions of neither from Prof Saha nor from the V~C Prof Sen could be obtained.
