Woman panchayet member escapes rape-attempt by neighbour

A rape attempt was made on an elected woman member of Dakshin Chandipur gram panchayet under Bhaluka police station of Manikchak block last night. The accused neighbour irked by the failure of the rape attempt hit the woman with a heavy weapon leaving her severely injured. The woman is now under treatment at Malda medical college & hospital (MMCH). The accused identified as Raju Chowdhury scampered away following the incident when the villagers rushed to the woman’s rescue.
The woman was elected a member of the rural body as a candidate of RSP. Her husband, a daily wage earner was away for a while last night. The woman expecting that he would come back shortly kept the main door of the house open. In her written complaint to police said the injured woman member of panchayet said that Raju Chowdhury trespassed into the house and tried to rape her.
As she tried to thwart the rape attempt, the infuriated youth hit her head with a heavy weapon causing profuse bloodshed. Her scream gathered the locals. Sensing a peril the accused fled away. The injured panchayet member was brought to MMCH later.
Police informed that a probe was started into the complaint of the injured woman. Searches are being made to arrest the culprit, said a police officer of Bhutni police station.
