A lorry driver Karna Mandal, 31 of Behula Colony area at Naldulbi area under Malda police station, who was beaten up by eve-teasers for protesting against molestation of his wife, succumbed to his injuries at Malda medical college & hospital (MMCH) last night. Acting upon his wife’s written complaint police have arrested Raju Mandal and Rishi Rajak, two major accused with prevalent criminal records.
It has been learnt from police sources that the deceased lorry driver’s wife was verbally abused by the accused duo while she was standing at the verandah of her house waiting for her husband’s return on last Friday evening.
“The goons not only threw lewd remarks at her but molested her physically too when she screamed for help. Karna, who was returning home heard her wife’s shout for help and rushed to her rescue. As he protested against their activities, the two accused started beating him with bamboo and other weapons. Eventually the locals rescued him with deep injury at head and admitted him to the block primary health centre. As his condition deteriorated, Karna was referred to MMCH where he died last night,” alleged Bimal Mandal, elder brother of the deceased.
Sriram Mandal, deputy head of Mangalbari gram panchayet and a resident of Naldubi area said, “Raju and Rishi together run a gang of criminals at the locality. They created an environment of fear and so none dared to protest against them. They abuse women and even the young girls. After police have taken action, locals are now united to raise voice against the gang.”
However, son and daughter of the dead lorry driver are still reeling under fear. The kids said that their father was mortally injured, the henchmen of the accused threatened them again with dire consequences if they opened their mouths about the incident. Arnab Ghosh, SP, Malda said, “Two accused have been arrested. A probe is underway.” (EOIC)
